Bage Mine is well known to most geologists because of a rare mineral, Cromfordite*, that was found there near an air shaft. But which shaft this was is not clear. The mine, however, had been sealed off for a number of years, and this is a report and survey of the workings still open.
The shaft used in the exploration is Hard End Shaft and was the main engine shaft for the mine. This is at SK 29155499 on the outskirts of Bolehill , north of Wirksworth (Fig. 1) . The shaft had a concrete cap, this had been covered with rubble when some of the surface buildings were demolished and the site levelled so the exact position of the shaft was not known.
The Wirksworth Mines Research group gained permission to re-locate the shaft in November 1980; when this was found,, a way through the cap was made and a manhole type cover fitted to allow future access (Batey 1981)*
